Chasing Domes in the East Village, Part One

This is a mini tour of churches, both active and closed, in New York City's East Village, which is home to large Ukrainian and Eastern European enclaves for well over 100 years. We'll start from north to south with a few zig zags in between.

Our first stop is techinically a block north of the traditionally accepted East Village boundraries.

1. St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church at 246 E 15th St, New York, NY 10003 (map link).

A striking, modern structure dedicated in 1962, it's located across the street from Stuyvesant Square Park.

2. Tifereth Israel Town & Village Synagogue - Formerly St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 334 E 14th St, New York, NY 10003 (map link).

Constructed in 1900, this stone building became St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the mother parish of the three current Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in Manhattan. It served as a Ukrainian Orthodox church until the final service in January 1962 when Torahs in procession down 14th St. called this sacred space their new home.

3. All Saints Ukrainian Orthodox Church at 206 E 11th St, New York, NY 10003 (map link).

The building is a former Hungarian Protestant church and has been home to All Saints since the end of 1962 when the community was formed out the sale of the former St. Volodymyr's a few blocks away on 14th St. All Saints has a spectacular exterior mosaic which was dedicated in 2012.

4. St. Nicholas Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church at 288 E 10th St, New York, NY 10009 (map link).

Located across the street from the northwest corner of famed Tomkins Square Park, this community moved into the former St, Mark's Episcopal Chapel in 1925 and purchased the building the Episcopal diocese in 1937.

Part Two will pick up a few blocks south on East 7th St.
